Historic Grimes County Courthouse in Anderson Texas

 

Anderson Texas is a city and the county seat of Grimes County. The town is named for Kenneth Lewis Anderson, a vice-president of the Republic of Texas who died here at the Fanthorp Inn, in 1845.  The city of Anderson was established in 1834 on he La Bahia Road, a centuries old Native American Trail that stretched from Louisiana through Texas. During the Civil War, a local arms factor produced cannons, cannon balls and weaponry.  Anderson is surrounded by scenic hills and historic structures.

Anderson Texas Attractions:

Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site.…This restored historic structure offers visitors an opportunity to walk through an historic inn that served as a stagecoach stops.  A communal dining table is set for a meal conveying a real sense of the traveler’s life in the 1850’s.  There is also a replica of Concord stagecoach. Located at 579 Main Street.

Grimes County Courthouse…This 1894 Edwardian Victorian structure is made of hand formed red brick and native stone.  The courtroom has a pressed metal ceiling and original furnishings.  Located at 100 Main Street.

Sam Houston National Forest….The Sam Houston National Forest, one of four National Forests in Texas, is located 50 miles north of Houston. The forest contains 163, 037 acres between Huntsville, Conroe, Cleveland and Richards, Texas. With land in Montgomery, Walker, and San Jacinto counties, the Sam Houston National Forest is intermingled with privately owned timber lands and small farms.  Activities include fishing, boating, camping, wildlife observation and hiking.  There is access from Anderson to a 43-mile paved route from the eastern edge of the blackland prairie through the thick pine forests of the Sam Houston National Forest to Huntsville State Park.
