Historic Leon County Courthouse in Centerville Texas

Centerville Texas is the county seat .of Leon CountyCenterville Texas was so named as it is near the geographic center of Leon County. However, it is also coincidentally located nearly midway between Dallas and Houston.

Centerville became the county seat of Leon County in 1850. It was originally built on 200 acres donated by Robert J Townes and D.C. Carrington. The town established an annual Black-Eyed Pea Festival in 1937.

Rolling hills and prairies characterize Centerville.  The historic 1887 county courthouse is located on the town square.  four jails are still standing in this peaceful little town, three of which are on the town square.  They were built in 1887, 1913 and 1913  The current jail was built in 1994 and is located on Texas 7.

Centerville Texas Attractions:

Fort Boggy State Park… Spend the day picnicking, fishing or taking in the natural beauty at this serene day use park set beside a picturesque lake well suited for canoes and small boats.  The park consists of 1,847 acres offers nature trails and an open air pavilion. The terrain is wooded, rolling hills, bottomland meadows, and wetlands. The abundant wildlife present in the park includes white-tailed deer, raccoons, squirrels, foxes and beavers. A large portion of the park is subject to flooding during wet periods, providing excellent habitat for waterfowl and other varieties of aquatic wildlife.  Located at 4994 Texas 75 S.  Free.

Lake Limestone…A Brazos River Authority Reservoir 13, 680 acre lake offers fishing, boating, primitive camping and picnicking.

Leon County Courthouse… This courthouse was built in 1887  after the 1858 original courthouse burned down.  It is made of slate bricks that were handmade near the site  It is one of the oldest such buildings in the state. Located a 204 E. St. Mary’s St.

Centerville Recommended Restaurants:

Woody’s Smokehouse… Don’t let the fact that this place is housed in a Shell gas station fool you.  Woody’s is packed with barbecue, baked goodies, jerky and all kinds of meats.  It is a regular stop for people traveling up and down I 45 between Houston and Dallas.
