Historic Freestone County Courthouse in Fairfield Texas

Fairfield Texas is the county seat of Freestone County, Texas.   The site was originally called Mound Prairie, but was changed to Fairfield in 1850 when it became the county seat. The original townsite, which consisted of 100 acres of the Redin Gainer league was donate by David Hill Love.  In 1851-52, 128 lots were auctioned off for prices ranging from six dollars to $101.  Rich farmland, vast mounts of timber, clear springs, an proximity to the Trinity River for transportation attracted settlers from the eastern states.  Fairfield acquitted a post office in 1851 and by September 1852 ha three dry good stores, two hotels, a grocery and a jail.

Freestone County Courthouse… Freestone has had 4 county courthouses; 1851, 1855, 1891 an 1919 (pictured above). It was built in the Classical Revival style and is made of brick.

Freestone County Museum…  This museum is housed in the county’s third jail building, built around 1880.  It features artifact from the county’s beginnings.  Also located on the grounds are two pre-Civil war cabins, an antique telephone museum ad a 1930’s church established to reform area bootleggers.  Located at 302 E. Main St.  Admission Charge.

Fairfield Lake….Lake is accessible from Fairfield Lake State Park and offers picnicking, camping and fishing. Bring your rod and reel, pack a lunch and enjoy a day at the lake.  Located seven miles northeast of Fairfield via FM 488.
