Free Fun Things to Do in Galveston

Galveston-Bolivar Ferry… Enjoy the gulf sea breezes as you travel between the East end of Galveston Island across to Port Bolivar.  Riders on the ferry can view the freighters journeying in and out the Houston Ship Channel, feed the gulls following the ferry from the back of the ferry and even occasionally see the dolphins dancing in the distant waters.

Movie & Music Nights on The Strand… Visit Saengerfest Park in downtown Galveston for a free family-friendly movie or concert under the stars. Gather up your blankets, pillows and chairs and enjoy a  film which are held the first Saturday of each month beginning at dusk. Concerts are held every second and fourth Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. Both events run March through October.

Stroll the Strand… The Strand located in downtown Galveston  running parallel to Galveston Bay take some time to enjoy the variety of shops in the district’s beautiful historic buildings, many of which survived the 1900 Storm, regarded as the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. The five block area  consists mainly of Victorian era structures and is now home to Galveston’s shopping and entertainment district.  Here visitors will enjoy restaurants, antique shops, and boutiques.

Tree Sculpture Tour…Galveston island residents have worked with area sculptors to transform damaged oak trees into breathtaking tree sculptures that are now the focus of the Galveston Tree Sculptures Tour. The 30-plus sculptures, including sculptures of dogs, dolphins, sea life and geisha and more are tucked into gardens and nestled in side yards throughout the island’s East End Historic District for the public to enjoy and find. 

Artwalk… Saturday nights come alive  in the historic district.  Art Walk, which occurs every  six to eight weeks Galveston art galleries, non profits, restaurants and stores  showcases art exhibits.  The event promotes art and artists with venues offering extended hors and refreshments.   Sponsored by the Galveston Arts Center.

Seawall Beach…The center of Galveston’s beach activity takes place along the island’s famous Seawall Boulevard. The seawall is moethan10 miles long and offers not only a great beach but also the nation’s longest continuous sidewalk. Here visitors can find beach front restaurants, tourist attractions such as Pleasure Pier, shopping and of course, the beach.

La King’s Taffy… Come visit a1920’s confectionary and watch this historic candy company make taffy while you watch.  La Kings also offers many other varieties of homemade candy such as peanut brittle, divinity, pecan pralines, hand dipped chocolates fudge along with a 1920’s soda fountain, serving malts, shakes, ice cream sodas, sundaes, splits, floats and your favorite fountain drinks.

Fishing…If you enjoy casting that rod Galveston has the perfect spots for you.  Visitors can fish the surf along most of Galveston beaches, or fish from one of Galveston jetties or piers such as the 61st fishing pier or Jimmy’s on the Pier at 91st.  No matter where you find your perfect fishing hole you will also be close to restaurants, bait shops and Mother Nature.

Birding…OMG if you love birding you will love Galveston.  The Galveston is home to extensive habitats from ocean, to bays, wetlands, grasslands,  and ponds. In Galveston numerous species can be found year round and each year with the annual spring and fall migrations the sightings are endless.  Bring your camera, bring your binoculars and lawn chair and be amazed at the beauty of the wildlife.

Each years thousands of visitors come to Galveston, not only for the sandy beaches,  the rich arts and culture venues, the museums, the entertainment but also because there are so many free fun things to do in Galveston. This year why not make Galveston your vacation destination.
