Historic Willacy County Courthouse

Raymondville, located in the northern part of South Texas, is the “Gateway to the Valley” as it is situated upon entrance to the Rio Grande Valley via U.S. HWY 77. Raymondville is a city in and the county seat of Willacy County, Texas.  Raymondville was formed in 1904 by Edward Burleson Raymond, a foreman of the El Sauz Ranch portion of the King Ranch and owner of the Las Majadas Ranch.

Raymondville is a quaint community approximately 50 miles north of Brownsville and South Padre Island.  Its proximity to Mexico is extremely benficial for product transportation and commerical trade with accessibility from six international bridges including (2) Brownsville, Harlingen, Progresso, Pharr and Hidalgo.

Fun Things to Do in Raymondville

Las Majadas Pond…This site provides wildlife viewing and birding opportunities and includes a paved path to a deck that is wheel chair accessible.  The pond is on the original Raymondville founder’s homestead.  Located 1.5 miles east of Raymondville on Texas 186.

Willacy County Art League Gallery… This art gallery features works by members throughout the Rio Grande Valley.  Located at 427 S.7th St.

Willacy County Courthouse… (pictured above)  The Willacy County Courthouse was built in 1922.  The courthouse is made of brick and designed in the Greek revival style.  Prior to this courthouse the county offices were in Sarita which was the county seat of Willacy County. When  nearby  Kenedy County was organized in 1921, the boundaries of Willacy County were redrawn and the county seat was moved to Raymondville. Sarita today is still a county seat but is now the county seat of nearby Kenedy County.  It also still has its original county courthouse built in 1917.

Willacy County Historical Museum… This museum showcases local history, art, natural history, and underwater artifacts from the coast,  It has a ball gown collection, and the Ranch and Farm Museum includes a cypress fence and gate.  Located at 427 S. Seventh St.

When enjoying some of the fun things in Raymondville visitors might also enjoy the nearby cities of Sarita and Harlingen.
