Historic Marion County Courthouse

Jefferson Texas is located in the Cypress Valley of Northeast Texas.  People come from all over to visit this charming city which features  just about something for everyone. Jefferson is home to many bed and breakfast, restaurants, different venues of entertainment and tours of historic homes.  There is plenty of shopping with a wide variety of antique and unique treasures.

Jefferson Texas Attractions:

Caddo Lake State Park…This Texas State Park is home to a modern dam which maintains the state’s only natural lake. Canoeists, kayakers, anglers and boaters explore the picturesque maze of bayous, thick with ancient bald cypress trees.  The park includes fully restored CCC pine log cabins  Located off Texas 45, 15 mile northeast of Marshall.  Admission Charge.

Historic Homes…Many of the city’s historic homes are open during the Historical Pilgrimage the firstweekendin May and Candlelight Tour he first two weekends in December.

  • House of the Seasons… Built in 1872, this is an example o the transition period between Greek Revival and Victorian architecture.   each side of the cupola features a different window panel illustrating the four seasons, and those colors are reflected throughout the house.  Tours daily; appointment required  Located at 409 S. Alley St.  Admission Charge.
  • Excelsior House Hotel… Guests of this 19th century hotel, opened in the late 1850’s, included Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, Jay Gould and Oscar Wilde.  Guest rooms feature period furnishings.  Located at 22 W. Austin St.  Tour Fee.
  • Historic Jefferson Hotel…This 1861 cotton warehouse was converted to a hotel in 1900 and later became a country inn and restaurant.  It features  turn-of-the-century iron beds, Victorian dressers and rocking chairs.  Located at 124 W. Austin St.

Historic Jefferson Railway..Jefferson Railway is a narrow gauge live steam ending which offers narrated historical day excursions. It travels along Jefferson’s Big Cypress bayou and an eight mile route through the woods   It also offers Ghost Trains rides.  www.jeffersonrailway.com. Jefferson Railway  is located at  400 E. Jay Gould Private Railroad Car… The “Atalanta” has a luxurious interior with four stateroom, lounge, dining room, kitchen, butler’s pantry and bathroom. Admission Charge.

Jefferson Carnegie Library…This library built in 1907 is one of few such libraries still serving its original purpose.  The second floor was designed as an opera house.  Located at 301 W. Jefferson.

Jefferson Historical Society Museum…This museum offers four floors of documents and antiques, including mementos of pioneers days, early steamboat commerce and antebellum society.  Visitors can view paintings from the D.D. Feldman collection.  It also home to an outstanding doll collection. Located at 223 W. Austin St. Admission Charge

Lafayette Vintage Vehicles Car Museum …This museum showcases vintage and antique cars from the 1920’s-50’s which have been restored.  They range from convertibles to ragtops and hard tops.  Located at 112 W. Lafayette St.

Lake O’ the Pines…An Army of Corps of  Engineers reservoir.  There are parks and marinas that offer fishing, boating swimming, picnicking and camping.  Located about 10 miles west of Jefferson via FM 729 and FM 726

Marion County Courthouse…Marion County has had two courthouses; 1874 and 1912 (pictured above)

Scarlett O’Hardy’s  Gone with the Wind Museum…This museum features a collection of rare movie posters , a first edition of the novel signed by Margaret Mitchell and promotional items inspired by the movie.  Located at 408 Taylor St.

Turning Basin River Boat…Visitors enjoy a 45 minute narrated  tour of the Big Cypress Bayou, featuring the riverport history of Jefferson.  Located just below the old trestle across the Polk Street Bridge.  Admission Charge.

When visiting Jefferson Texas nearby attractions include Linden, Marshall, and Uncertain.
