Historic Madison County Courthouse

Madisonville Texas is a city and the county seat of  Madison County, Texas Both the City of Madisonville and the County of Madison were named for U.S. President James Madison, the fourth chief executive. Madisonville was established in 1853.

Madisonville Texas Attractions

Woodbine Hotel and Museum…. Located at 209 N.Madison Street was built in 1904 as a hotel/boarding house and operates as a bed and breakfast today. This hotel is completely restored and furnished ad the building is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.

Lake Madison Park… Located  on Texas  21 and includes a 75 acre reservoir, boat ramp, fishing, picnic area and sports field.

Madison County Courthouse….(pictured above)  Madison County has had a total of five courthouses.The first courthouse built in 1854 was made of logs.  The second courthouse constructed in 1860 was destroyed by fire in 1865.  The third courthouse was built in 1870 and was also destroyed by fire in 1875. In 1896 a stately brick courthouse was built to replace the previous wooden structures, however it was also destroyed by fire in 1967. The current courthouse was built in 1970 and is made of brick concrete.

Madison County Museum…Located at 201 N.Madison near the courthouse square.This refurbished turn of the century bank building houses a museum of rotating exhibits and artifacts from local citizens, such as the Truman Kimbro family,  Kimbro was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for this WWII service at the Battle of the Bulge.

Madisonville Texas Events:

About 400,000 pounds of fresh mushroom are produced weekly at Monterey Mushrooms, Ic. contributing to Madisonville’s official designation by the Texas Legislature as the “Mushroom Capital of Texas”.  Madisonville is home to the annual events  including the Texas Mushroom Festival held each October.

When visiting Madisonville Texas nearby attractions include Bryan/College Station, Crockett and Centerville.
