Historic Camp County Courthouse in Pittsburg Texas

Pittsburg Texas  is the county seat of Camp County. It is best known as the former home of the giant poultry producer Pilgrim’s and the home of racing legend Carroll Shelby. Pittsburg is also the birthplace of Cavenders Boot City. It is also the hometown of Tennessee Titan Kendall Wright. In 1902, it was the site of an early flight attempt by the Ezekiel Air Ship Mfg Co.  Pittsburg  is in a heavily timbered are and it is one of the top 10 peach producing counties in Texas.

Pittsburg Texas Attractions:

Ezekiel Airship…This 1901 airship was built based on the Biblical Book of Ezekiel.  It was destroyed in a rail accident on its way to the 1904 St. Lois World’s Fair.  There is a historical maker located at the original Fulton Street building site.  A full size replica of the air ship is on display at the Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Center.

Camp County Courthouse… Camp County has had two county courthouses; 1881 and 1928 (pictured above). The Classical Revival courts building features a stepped parapet, flat arched windows and Corinthian columns. Today, the courthouse remains a central part of life in Camp County.

The Farmstead…This farmstead is a completely restored 100 year old house, barn and smokehouse furnished wit period antiques. Located at 206 Mount Pleasant St.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park…This state park offers great bass fishing at Lake Bob Sandlin.  It is a popular site for visitors from the Dallas area.  Visitors can enjoy boating, hiking and wildlife viewing.  A variety of campsites are available.  Located between Mount Pleasant and Pittsburg.

Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Center and Museum…This museum is housed in the old Cotton Belt Railroad museum.  Exhibits include artifacts and documents from 1854 when the town was established antique farm equipment and memorabilia.  Located at 204 W. Marshall.

Witness Park and Prayer Tower…This 75 foot tower features four Paccard bells from France and a chapel that never closes.  The park features a fountain and life size bronze statue that shows Jesus washing the disciple Peter’s feet.  Located at the intersection of Jefferson and Lafayette Streets.
