Port Arthur Texas

Port Arthur Texas located in the most northern Gulf Coast shoreline offers vacations opportunities for everyone.  Port Arthur offers year round fishing, festivals and fun.

Port Arthur Texas is named after Arthur E. Stillwell, a railroad builder and was established in 1895. The town quickly grew and soon became a booming seaport.

Anglers come to Port Arthur for year round fishing and enjoy fishing around Pleasure Island. Fishing is allowed from most of the island coastline.   Numerous guide services are available for fishing excursions.

Sabine Lake, about 14 miles long and 7 miles wide with an average depth of 5 to 8 feet, is the most productive marine ecosystem in the states of Texas and Louisiana.  It is a fisherman’s paradise for speckled trout, redfish, and flounder.

Museum lovers will certainly enjoy the Texas Arts Museum whose exhibits feature regional artwork that is changed monthly so there is always new works to admire.  The Museum of the Gulf Coast  focus on Southeast Texas history and includes a musical hall of fame.

Port Arthur also is home to a number of  historical architectural masterpieces which include  A.J.M. Vuylsteke Home built in 1905 and features the Dutch heritage of the original owner, Pompeiian Villa built in 1900 is a grandiose home and an exact replica of the roman Pompeiian home of 70. A.D.  Rose Hill Manor built in 1906 offers a spectacular view of maritime traffic along the coast of Port Arthur and  White Haven, which was transformed from  New England-Colonial style home to a Greek revival style home and it offers a wide variety of splendid pieces of collections.

For the historical buffs among us, Sabine Pass Battleground State Historical Site focuses on the battle that took place on September 8, 1863.

Visitors will also want to visit  Buu Mon Buddhist  Temple and Lotus Gardens which features beautiful and peaceful gardens, a pagoda, and koi pond. The garden also includes towering bamboo, banana and citrus trees.  Buu Mon Buddhist Temple offers private tours by appointment.  The Queen of Peace Shrine and Gardens is home to a beautiful garden and a large statue of the Virgin Mary.

There are numerous events held throughout the year in Port Arthur of which the Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas, held in February, is most popular.

When visiting Port Arthur you may also want to visit Bridge City, Orange, Beaumont,  and  Nederland which all offer wonderful venues of activities for the entire family. There are many beaches, wildlife refuges, state parks, museums and gardens to tour while in the Port Arthur region of the gulf coast.
