The Whitehead Memorial Museum, located in Del Rio, is dedicated to the life and legends of the frontier Southwest. The museum features a rustic structure that was an early trading post serving both Texas and Mexico. The museum consists of 2.5 acres and 9 buildings.


Cadena Nativity

The Cadena nativity is 32′ long, 10′ high, and 20′ deep and has 1,287 items. This culture folk-art exhibit was the life-long passion/work of a local Del Rio resident and was given to us for exhibition by her family after her death. Because of its size, it is on exhibit in its own temperature-controlled building.

Dr Rodriguez- Hispanic Doctor ExhibitIn 1925 Dr. Rodriguez became the first Hispanic Doctor in the Del Rio area. He is credited with delivering over 3000 babies in the surrounding area. His exhibit features the articles and instruments of his practice.

War Room Exhibit:

The war room consists of various artifacts and period pieces from the Confederacy, WWI, WWII, and Laughlin Air Force Base.

Perry House Exhibit:
The Perry House was built in1870 and was the largest mercantile store between San Antonio, Eagle Pass and El Paso. The family lived on the second floor of the building while the store was in the first floor.

La Zappa Chapel

The La Zappa Chapel was built in honor of the 300 years of Spanish influence on Christianity in this area. The chapel is named for the type of underground shelter used by travelers who passed through this area. This chapel continues to be used today, for weddings and special occasions.

Barn Exhibit:The Barn contains many different types of exhibits, ranging from early transportation, a wildlife safari display to a room dedicated to the history of Native American Indians. These items reveal the diversity of the Del Rio/Val Verde county area and its residents.
Hal Patton Office-1905:
The Hal Patton Office building was originally built in 1905 and now houses the Black Seminole Scouts exhibit.

Jersey Lil:This is a replica of Judge Roy Bean’s famous saloon court. For many years, Bean was the only “Law West of the Pecos”. The Judge and his son, Sam, are buried behind the Jersey Lil.
